R. Kelly arrested on federal sex trafficking charges, reports say

According to TMZ, who broke the report, the R&B musician was booked Thursday (July 11) on crimes in two different states: Chicago and NY.

Prosecutors said Kelly and his entourage recruited women and girls at concerts and other venues to "engage in illegal sexual activity".

The 52-year-old was arrested by Homeland Security Investigation agents and NYPD Public Safety Task Force, officials told News 4, and it is expected he will be brought to NY.

He was taken into custody in Chicago at around 7pm.

In June, Kelly was back in court facing 11 new felony sex assault charges and various abuse in IL, to which he pled not guilty.

The Cook County charges involve alleged abuse of a victim between the ages of 13 and 16. He pleaded not guilty to those charges and was released on bail.

Kelly's attorney, Steve Greenberg, confirmed to the Sun-Times that the singer had been arrested and his publicist told WBBM that a press conference would be held on Friday morning.

This June photo of R. Kelly shows him departing a courtroom in Chicago in a case related to a state sexual abuse case.

Kelly is now facing 18 federal counts, including child pornography, racketeering and kidnapping.

Soon after the release of the Lifetime documentary, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx asked victims and witnesses to come forward to help them build a case against Kelly.

Kelly has denied the allegations.

Back in 2008, he was brought to trial when a video circulated which allegedly featured Kelly having sex with a girl as young as 13. Kelly's attorneys have not commented on the latest round of charges. In February, authorities charged Kelly with 10 counts of aggravated criminal abuse. Kelly plead not guilty to these last month.

Prior to Thursday's arrest, Kelly was on bail for a slate of charges in Chicago, including five felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault.
