The European Council elected today Charles Michel as President of the European Council.

Von der Leyen played a significant role in modernizing the image of her party during the Merkel years, over which it dominated the political middle ground.

Timmermans's nomination was also deeply unpopular with the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament, which argued it should hold the commission presidency as it has the most legislators in parliament.

"And Christine Lagarde - somebody we know very well in Ireland - heading up the European Central Bank, who'll continue the policies of Mario Draghi - particularly around keeping interest rates low".

Her father Ernst Albrecht, was a senior civil servant in the European Union before getting involved in the state politics in Lower Saxony.

"After all, Europe is a woman", he told a news conference after three day of tortuous talks between 28 European Union leaders on assigning the bloc's top jobs exposed their deepening divisions.

When he takes over from current incumbent Donald Tusk, Michel will be responsible for coordinating and presiding over European summits (which usually bring together the bloc's leaders in Brussels) and will represent the EU overseas alongside the president of the Commission.

The fifth key role - president of the European Parliament - is to be chosen on Wednesday.

Failing to reach a decision on the first 20 hours of discussion since Sunday afternoon, the leaders need to deliver in their European Commission president pick quickly, along with the European parliament head, the foreign policy chief and the new president of the European Council, at an extra session that was due to resume at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, after a series of parallel meetings took place on Tuesday morning.

Both men running to succeed British Prime Minister Theresa May - Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt - say they want to renegotiate the divorce agreement thrashed out with the EU.

Reuters reported earlier that Tusk would make Timmermans the president of the European Commission while letting Weber be the president of the European Parliament.
