President Trump signs executive order issuing additional sanctions on Iran

The new measures target Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Trump administration wants to force Tehran to open talks on its nuclear and missile programmes and its activities in the region.

The downing of the aircraft on Thursday marked a new high in the rising tensions between the United States and Iran in the Persian Gulf. Both were staunch backers of the nuclear deal abandoned by Trump and have called for calm as the USA almost initiated military action against Iran on Thursday.

Sources said U.S. Cyber Command launched the cyberattack targeting the Iranian intelligence and radar installations used to down the U.S. Navy drone last week.

The regional stops, made on his way to India, may be aimed at reassuring Washington's Sunni Gulf Arab allies that the White House remains committed to maintaining pressure on Shi'Ite Iran following Trump's last-minute about face, which likely raised questions about United States willingness to use force against the Islamic Republic.

He said Iranian involvement in conflicts across the region had increased as a result of the nuclear deal, which gave the country a new cash infusion, and had nothing to do with the USA exit from the agreement.

Diplomatic efforts are underway to ease the crisis following attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf in recent weeks that the United States blames on Iran and the shooting down of the American drone last week.

President Donald Trump has called on other countries to step up in contributing to the defense of global assets in the strategic, tense waters of the Strait of Hormuz, just as his top diplomat visited Saudi Arabia to discuss joint security efforts and potentially advance new arms deals. "Never can Iran have a nuclear weapon", Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Britain and the U.S., in a joint statement published by the Saudi embassy in Washington on Sunday, voiced concern about the escalation in Houthi attacks, without mention of the latest drone launches.

The sultanate of Oman, meanwhile, said reports that it had served as a back channel for the United States to Iran in the aftermath of last week's drone shooting were "not true".

Washington, which said the drone was in worldwide skies, then appeared to come close to attacking Iranian military targets, with Trump saying that he aborted a retaliatory air strike 10 minutes before it was to go ahead.

The AP reported that the U.S. cyber-attacks were the second go-to measure after President Trump backed off from launching a military strike against Iranian military and radar bases last week, on Thursday.

USA media have reported that Washington launched cyber attacks last week even as Trump called off his air strike.

Yahoo! News first reported on the retaliatory cyber strike. Riyadh's human rights record has always been called into question by worldwide organizations and Washington's lawmakers have grown increasingly critical of the relationship between the two countries amid a reported rise in civilian casualties in the Saudi-led war in Yemen and the Saudi royal family's suspected role in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The attacks come amid heightened regional tensions with Iran, which Saudi Arabia has repeatedly accused of supplying sophisticated weapons to the rebels.

From the kingdom, Pompeo will travel to neighbouring United Arab Emirates, another close USA ally.

"We are very concerned".

But some of his closest aides, such as national security advisor John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are said to favour a far more muscular USA strategy.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said Sunday the U.S.

The U.S. has already imposed a series of tough economic sanctions on Iran, including severe limits on its oil exports.

Mr Trump pulled out of a long-term deal struck with Iran in 2015 to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in global inspectors in return for the lifting of economic sanctions.

President Trump also said America is a peace loving nation and does not seek conflict with Iran, and he looks forward to releasing the sanctions when the Iranian leadership is willing to negotiate.
