Now-delayed nationwide immigration sweep brings anxiety, fear in Minnesota

US President Donald Trump abruptly suspended his wide-ranging threat to deport "millions" of undocumented immigrants starting Sunday, demanding that Democrats and Republicans forge a plan to stanch the record flows of asylum-seeking families across the southern border into the United States.

Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Mark Morgan said he still has the "green light" to carry out deportations after President Donald Trump postponed raids scheduled for Sunday in multiple USA cities.

On Saturday, the president announced on Twitter that ICE would hold off on the roundup for two weeks "at the request of Democrats", writing that if lawmakers in Washington can not approve changes to asylum law in that time, he will again direct ICE agents to resume the raids.

After Trump announced the delay on Saturday, Pelosi tweeted: 'Mr.

"The President's action makes no distinction between a status violation and committing a serious crime", Pelosi said, urging faith-based and other leaders to convey to Trump the value of U.S. refugee resettlement programs. Though the House and Senate packages differ in how money should be allocated, neither address asylum laws or broad immigration reform.

The planned raids would target about 2,000 people throughout 10 immigration court locations including Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York and San Francisco.

The tweet comes after immigration advocates and officials in some major US cities condemned Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids aimed at rounding up thousands of families facing deportation orders beginning Sunday.

"I resolve on to give the Democrats each and every final likelihood to snappy negotiate straightforward changes to Asylum and Loopholes", the president wrote on Twitter.

Even before that message came out, it's rather unbelievable that a member of Congress, elected last fall, would go out of her way to share information on social media for those here illegally in an effort to help them avoid detection and arrest. "This means that they have run from the law and run from the courts. I would hope he would apply that same value to avoiding the collateral damage to tens of thousands of children who are frightened by his actions", she said.

President Trump has directed ICE agents to conduct a mass roundup of migrant families that have received deportation orders, an operation that is likely to begin with pre-dawn raids in major United States cities today, according to three United States officials with knowledge of the plans.

Immigration activists say the president is using the operation for political purposes and warn it is causing fear in the immigrant community, leading migrants to miss work and school.

So, what the President did - he recognized that, and so he postponed, one, to protect them, but also to give Congress another chance on a bipartisan method to actually get together, pass this supplement, so that we can enforce the rule of law.

In his tweet, Trump said "Democrats" had asked him to hold off on the raids.

In an interview with NPR, Acting ICE Director Mark Morgan said many immigrant families are ignoring requests to turn themselves in.

The number of people crossing the U.S. -Mexico border has risen dramatically under Trump, despite his tough rhetoric and hard-line policies.

Earlier in the day, Trump defended the raids, arguing that the targeted families have been dodging the law.

Similarly, in Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot, D, announced that the city's police department had revoked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement access to some of its databases, and that Chicago police would not "cooperate with or facilitate any ICE enforcement actions".

For the most part, the migrants being targets came to the U.S.as families.
