Trump delays ICE raids for 2 weeks after blowback

The Washington Post reported on Friday that the operation is slated to launch on Sunday and is expected to target up to 2,000 families facing deportation orders in as many as 10 USA cities, including Houston, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will seek out families facing deportation orders, acting Director Mark Morgan said Friday. She says Superintendent Eddie Johnson confirms the order has been carried out.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement, "We stand with our undocumented immigrant communities and are committed to protecting them, regardless of the actions of President Trump and his administration".

However, acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan has reportedly been urging ICE to take a more limited approach to detain a group of about 150 families who had attorneys but dropped out of the legal process and absconded, warning that the widespread operation could risk separating children from their parents.

"It is unconscionable that the Federal administration is targeting innocent immigrant families with secret raids that are created to inflict as much fear and pain as possible", said San Francisco Mayor London Breed, who leads a sanctuary city. "They broke the law by coming into the country, and now by staying".

ICE has been preparing agents and equipment for the operation starting Sunday morning and lasting several days, officials told The Washington Post.

An ICE spokesperson said the agency would not provide details about the operation until it was over due to the sensitivity of the matter.

"As mayor, I trust that only those individuals who represent a clear and present danger to our communities will be affected by this DHS policy", Suarez said.

Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami - which joins Chicago on the list expecting raids on Sunday - characterized the impending ICE raids somewhat differently.

"The city does not try to do ICE's job, nor does it try to impede ICE".

Trump told reporters Saturday before leaving for Camp David: "Some cities are going to fight it". Some people will likely appeal their cases, but eventually some will be removed. The Obama and Trump administrations have targeted families in previous operations. He pledged that immigration officials would treat the families "with compassion and humanity".

"We agree that criminals, like risky gang members who came here illegally, should be deported immediately", Suarez said in a statement.
