Iran shoots down United States surveillance drone, heightening tensions

An "American spying drone" was shot down by the IRGC Aerospace Force over Iranian airspace at dawn on Thursday.

The United States, which called the event an "unprovoked attack" in global airspace, is using economic sanctions to pressure Iran to contain its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and to limit its role in regional wars.

We will remind, on Thursday in the Islamic revolutionary guards Corps (IRGC) said that the downed American reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Global Hawk.

The RQ-4 Global Hawk was at least 34 kilometers from Iranian territory when it was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, said Air Force Lt. Gen. Joseph Guastella, commander of the U.S. Central Command.

According to the statement, Baharvand "protested against the United States drone's violation of Iranian airspace and said that Washington was responsible for those provocative actions". Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "The administration is engaged in what I would call measured responses".

Tehran denied its involvement in the attacks on the tankers even as it announced, also on Monday, that over the following week it would increase its stockpile of low-enriched uranium past the limits agreed under the 2015 nuclear deal.

"In the last 24 hours, Iran has intensified its aggression against the United States and against all of us", he said. "The president made the final decision", said the official. It reinstated punishing sanctions following Trump's decision to pull the US out of an global agreement meant to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for relief from earlier sanctions. The U.S. military occasionally publishes images from there of the drones, which have a distinctive hump-shaped front and an engine atop the fuselage. "Iran can NEVER have Nuclear Weapons, not against the United States of America, and not against the WORLD!" But Urban said the US Navy's Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS-D) aircraft-an RQ-4A Global Hawk High-Altitude Long Endurance unmanned aircraft system used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations-was operating in worldwide airspace at the time.

The US has already said it is sending an additional 1,000 troops to the Middle East in response to alleged "hostile behaviour" by Iran.

European diplomats have said more evidence is needed to pinpoint responsibility for the tanker strikes.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday issued an emergency order prohibiting U.S. operators from flying in an oversea area of Tehran-controlled airspace over the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman.

Senior officials from Iran, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russian Federation will meet on June 28 in Vienna to discuss ways to save the 2015 nuclear accord, the European Union said on Thursday.

After interviewing Trump for NBC's "Meet the Press" program, NBC correspondent Chuck Todd said Trump had said he had no preconditions for talks with Iran and was willing to speak to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani or Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
