Everyone Said The Same Thing After USWNT’s 13-0 Win Over Thailand

The U.S. team not only shattered the record for goals and margin of victory in a World Cup match, but Alex Morgan tied another World Cup record by scoring five goals during the game - American Michelle Akers previously performed the impressive feat in a quarterfinal game against Chinese Taipei in 1991. Morgan was joined by team mates Rose Lavelle, Lindsay Horan, Sam Mews, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd, adding up to 13 goals in total.

The United States is not getting ahead of itself at the World Cup, although it's generally understood that the team's first two group games - against Thailand and Chile - should not be all that demanding. Seven different players scored for the U.S., with Morgan's five leading the way.

'I just think they could have won with some humility and grace, and they just couldn't manage to do that, ' Rustad said. After New Zealand's coach complained, Sundhage responded: "We score goals and you're happy".

After setting a World Cup career high with five goals, Morgan definitely looked the part against Thailand.

"As a coach, I don't find it my job to harness my players and rein them in because this is what they've dreamed about".

'Celebrating goals later in the game like this is just completely unnecessary.

"But these people counting their goals, this ..." I'm embarrassed. There's kids watching this. "I said in the pre-game yes you want to score goals, yes you want to make a mark with the goal difference...there's a way to do it and that's the way for me". "But there's a way to do it, and that is not the way for me". From there, she really laid it on in the second half.

U.S. legend Abby Wambach also backed the team, tweeting that "for some players this is there [sic] first World Cup goal, and they should be excited".

Is it Ok to celebrate scoring no matter what, or do you think being a good sport should come first?

But some pundits have criticised the American players for both their ruthlessness in dishing out such a defeat, and excessive celebrations late in the game as the goals piled up.

Thailand's national men's soccer team, the War Elephants, has never qualified for a World Cup. Morgan offered encouragement to forward Miranda Nild, who like Morgan played college soccer at Cal. This is their first World Cup and I'm so proud of them. Get that win, and then get the equal pay you deserve!

What is clear is that Ellis and co wanted to let the world know they meant business.

The priority of Thailand's football association, Boonyapuganna said, is to develop soccer at the grassroots level, through its under-10 and under-12 youth leagues. Stop judging these women with patriarchal glasses.
