Trump slams Watergate figure Dean as 'sleazebag' amid Dem testimony

"Is the chairman prepared to rescind his baseless recommendation to hold the attorney general in contempt, or do House Democrats still plan to green light lawsuits against the attorney general and former White House counsel tomorrow?"

The court fight to enforce a subpoena to Attorney General William Barr is no longer necessary - at least for the time being - as a result of the agreement the committee struck with the Justice Department, Nadler said.

This story is breaking and will be updated.

During a meeting with the House Judiciary Committee chairman, New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, and other committee heads last week, Pelosi made the case that she would rather see Trump voted out of office and "in prison" than merely impeached, according to a report in Politico. But it is the first agreement that the Judiciary panel has been able to strike with the department since the report was issued in April. The White House has asserted executive privilege and asked McGahn to not testify before the committee.

The agreement marks a rare moment of compromise between the Trump administration and congressional Democrats, who have been seeking materials from Mueller's two-year investigation, which examined Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and whether Trump tried to undermine the probe.

Former White House Counsel John Dean during a congressional hearing on Monday drew parallels between the Mueller report and Watergate, arguing the report does contain evidence of collusion. Her comments were part of a House Judiciary Committee hearing on June 10 created to review the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. "It is critical that Congress is able to obtain the information we need to do our jobs, ensuring no one is above the law and bringing the American public the transparency they deserve".

Trump calls Mueller's probe a "witch hunt". On the other, the coerced deal shows that Democratic threats to move against Barr specifically and the administration generally on a potentially fruitful legal course of action - with an even greater implied threat of impeachment proceedings if that doesn't work - can produce some results. Mueller said there was not enough evidence to establish a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, but he said he could not exonerate Trump on obstruction.

The contempt vote is reportedly still scheduled for Tuesday, despite the agreement, Politico reported.

Georgia Rep. Doug Collins, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, sent Nadler a letter Friday calling the upcoming hearing a "mock impeachment hearing" and warning Democrats to be civil when speaking of the president. The documents represent the underlying evidence for the second volume of Mueller's report, which dealt with the investigation into alleged obstruction of justice by Trump.
