Asif Ali Zardari arrested as IHC rejects bail application

Former Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari was arrested from his Islamabad residence on Monday in connection with a fake bank accounts case.

It came after a high court rejected extending pre-arrest bail for him and his sister.

NAB officials made the arrest from Zardari House in Islamabad today.

Addressing press conference in Islamabad after National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested former president and party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal said, "Speaker and Deputy Speaker National Assembly are working as an extension of the government".

"This is political victimization", said Shazia Marri, a lawmaker from Zardari's party.

The PML-N president demanded Asad Qaiser to issue the production order for Zardari.

Sources told Geo News that NAB has already formed a team to carry out the arrest of the PPP leader.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Kiani of the IHC gave the verdict on the petitions after hearing arguments from both sides.

During the proceeding of the case, NAB furnished all record in the court, as per its order, pertaining to the fake accounts transactions.

Mr Zardari previously spent 11 years in jail on corruption and murder charges before becoming president in 2008. In September, Pakistan's Supreme Court established a commission in September to investigate the case and found that at least $400m had passed through "thousands of false accounts".

Imran Khan was elected previous year vowing to root out the corruption that has dogged the country and saying he would track down vast sums stolen by the country's political elite.
