Helicopter rescue in Phoenix goes wildly off track

Apolinar said the department has performed hoist rescues 210 times over the last six years, and they know of the spinning phenomenon happening just twice before. "Today, it didn't", lead pilot Paul Apolinar said.

An elderly woman's hiking day on one of Phoenix's popular urban mountains spun out of control, literally, on Tuesday after she needed a helicopter rescue. The spinning, meanwhile, was caused by a side effect of down wash from the helicopter's rotors and is a common occurrence in hoist rescues.

She was dizzy and nauseous after her rescue but had no additional injuries, according to CNN.

"They start to lower the load, it does actually start to stop", Derek Geisel, the pilot during the rescue, told reporters.

Firefighters decided the best course of action was to fly the woman off the mountain and the dramatic rescue was captured on video.

"Once we got the forward flight, the spin got to the point where they were safely able to bring the patient up to the aircraft", Geisel said. "Then we slowly brought it back up ... it started to spin again". As she was being transported, the basket began to spin wildly.

But after she was lifted up, the basket started to spin round at an increasing speed.

Shelly Jamison, the assistant chief for the Phoenix Fire Department, said the news conference was called, in part, because of the viral response online.

"We're not trying to minimize what happened up there", Dubnow said.

"Reports from the hospital are that she is stable and she had no ill effects from the spin", Dubnow said in the press conference, adding that responders were aware of the spin before treating her. She was packed into a Bauman bag and basket for removal from the area, something that the rescuers have done a lot of.
