Trump vows to double, triple trade with United Kingdom, post Brexit

Trump vows to double, triple trade with United Kingdom, post Brexit

Trump and May concluded a series of meetings with general commitments to pursue a new trade deal - although apparently without one in place.

The two world leaders also talked about their differing opinions on the Iran nuclear deal.

He took to the president's proffered communication medium, Twitter, to tell Mr Trump what he thought of the idea.

But the collapse of Ms May's premiership over Brexit and Mr Trump's penchant for ignoring the conventions of modern diplomacy have made the trip one of the most unconventional state visits in recent British history.

"On behalf of all Americans, I offer a toast to the eternal friendship of our people, the vitality of our nations, and to the long, cherished, and truly remarkable reign of Her Majesty the Queen", Trump said at the end of his speech, in which he talked of the U.S. -U.K. alliance during WWII.

Trump, in an interview with The Sun before he arrived in England on Monday for his state visit, said Johnson would be an "excellent" choice to replace May.

Trump has already weighed in by urging Britain to walk away from the European Union without an agreement -- and suggested that Brexit-backing former foreign minister Boris Johnson would be an "excellent" choice to head the government and get it done.

Trump was shown a pewter horse that he gave as a gift when they met in July 2018, and was asked whether he recognized it.

"I think it's more likely that the tariffs go on".

"We're going to both have absolutely an agreement on Huawei and everything else", he said.

Trump continued talks with May at her residence at 10 Downing St. And while Trump has avoided criticizing May on this visit, unlike a year ago when he blistered her in a newspaper interview just before landing in London, the president has touted her rival, Conservative Party leadership candidate Boris Johnson, as an "excellent" leader for the United Kingdom. "We will be bringing central London to a standstill".

Among those taking part will be environmental activists, anti-racism campaigners and women's rights protesters.

Socialist Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, the U.K.'s second largest, is scheduled to speak to protesters in London today.

He said the protest was "an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those he's attacked in America, around the world and in our own country".

But before he had even landed, Mr Trump had begun to make his mark, labelling Mr Khan a "stone cold loser" on Twitter minutes before his arrival.

But, after an hour long meeting with May, Trump said any issues could be resolved.

The GMB union's national secretary Rehana Azam said Mr Trump is "just waiting to get his hands on our NHS" and "there's a very real danger Conservatives will just hand it over to him in a trade deal".

The robot caught the attention of passers-by with its recitation of Trump's trademark phrases, including "No collusion" and "You are fake news". "You saw the people waving the American flag, waving your flag".

The International Trade secretary described Ivanka Trump, who he sat next to at the Queen's state banquet, as an "extremely intelligent, charming, pleasant and well-informed dinner partner".
