Apple to shut down iTunes after 18 years

Apple to shut down iTunes after 18 years

Reports earlier this year suggested that Apple is planning to put videos, podcasts and music in separate apps, rendering the iTunes programme defunct.

A lot of the changes will be coming to Apple's other most successful pieces of hardware: the watch and iPad.

That means that when you plug in your iPhone, iTunes won't pop open trying to do everything.

Among the new features expected in iOS 13 are the long-awaited Dark Mode, the combination of Find My friends with Find My iPhone, and improved tools for Mail.

Apple has revealed its new Mac operating system - macOS Catalina.

The news came with the announcement of macOS Catalina, the latest version of Apple's desktop operating system.

Rumours of iTunes's replacement started as soon as the company launched Apple Music in 2015, which now has about 56 million paid subscribers.

With subscription streaming platforms like Spotify and Google Music becoming the most popular ways people engage with new music, Apple has had to bite the bullet and announce the closure of its one-time revolutionary media download service iTunes. Songs are locked to only be played on iPods and within iTunes. The service launches with a number of partners including Disney.

For the time being, however, Apple remains completely tight-lipped on everything it plans on the iTunes front, albeit a confirmation of all these changes is expected to be offered this week at WWDC.

A similar migration is happening on Instagram as well, as the iTunes profile is being transferred to the Apple TV page.

The move comes as users shifted towards managing music on their phones, and iTunes itself had become increasingly bloated.

Unifying Mac and iOS development could give Apple more revenues from Mac app sales, while potentially diversifying the range of software available for Macs.

What do you think of Apple doing away with iTunes in favor of stand-alone apps? The tech company also reported in April that iPhone sales fell 17 percent in the first three months of the year.
