"Our beloved squad member José Antonio Reyes died in a traffic accident", the club said.

He would later return to his boyhood club in 2012, winning the Europa League on three separate occasions.

He then left the British club permanently to join Atletico Madrid in Spain where he won the Europa League twice.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, said in a tweet: "The Atletico de Madrid family is in mourning".

Reyes spent four years at Atletico after joining the club in 2007.

Perhaps Reyes' most famous contribution came for Real Madrid in the 2006/07 season to seal the La Liga title with two goals, after replacing David Beckham from the bench.

The former Spanish worldwide was just 35 years of age and was still playing with Spanish second division side Extremadura.

He was part of the Arsenal side that conquered the Premier League in 2003/04, playing alongside the likes of Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry.

"Wonderful player, superb team mate and exceptional human being".

Reyes leaves behind his wife Noelia Lopez, whom he married in June 2017, and three children, daughters Noelia and Triana and son Jose Antonio Jr from a previous relationship.
