Amazon’s big privacy push includes deleting Alexa recordings by voice

The Echo Show 5 is an affordable alternative to the Rs. 22,999 Amazon Echo Show, which offers much of the same functionality and features as the high-end device.

Amazon's Echo 5 is available for pre-order on Amazon's site here and will ship in the U.S., United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia next month, to India in July and to Mexico at some unspecified time.

Inc.is updating its Alexa voice software to let users delete recordings of their voice using a spoken command, a move that follows criticism of the company's privacy practices related to its digital assistant.

Simply say, "Alexa, delete everything I said today", and all your voice commands and other mistakenly-triggered snippets from the day will be gone.

The camera on the £119.99 ($129) Echo Spot, which doubles up as a "smart alarm", will also probably be facing directly at the user's bed.

Its footprint is far smaller than that of the standard Echo Show, closer to a modern smartphone than a tablet.

The new Echo Show device also comes with additional privacy protections, having a built-in camera shutter, while still being able to talk to Alexa. The last Alexa device created to reside on the bedside table, Echo Spot, did not include a physical shutter to cover the camera. Or listen to radio stations, podcasts, and audiobooks.

While it's not in use, you can display clock faces or your own photo on the home screen. While it was previously possible to delete voice recordings from within the Alexa app, the new voice command streamlines the process considerably. Amazon says you can also "view your smart home camera feed and thermostats, access recently used devices, and manage smart devices by group".

Designed around your privacy - Turn off the microphone and camera with one press of a button.

Amazon on Wednesday also launched a new Alexa Privacy Hub, a dedicated section of its site where users can review how Alexa and Echo devices work. The Echo Show 5 gives you the same access to everything the Echo Show does but in a smaller size and a cheaper price point.
