USA hiker found after two weeks lost in Hawaii forest

A Maui woman who went missing more than two weeks ago in Hawaii after a hike has been found alive.

"I think she took a good fall", John Eller, Amanda's father, told Maui 24/7.

Friends had launched a "Find Amanda" campaign on Facebook, and just an hour before she was rescued they offered a US$50,000 (RM209,266) reward for information.

Cantellops posted photos of himself and Eller on his Facebook page to share with the public his joy of having found her, as well as enormous gratitude for those who had been supporting the search. Searchers Troy Helmer, Javier Cantellops and Chris Berquist spotted the missing hiker from air, foraging for food.

Eller called her father Friday to tell him she's OK, a post said. "I'm so incredible grateful". Volunteers spent days scouring the thick forest around the trailhead where she parked.

Eller was not only found alive but in healthy condition, even though local media reported she did appear to suffer a hiking-related injury.

"I wanted to go back the way I'd come, but my gut was leading me another way - and I have a very strong gut instinct", she said.

"I looked up and they were right on top of me", she said. It is believed she went for a jog.

Mr Cantellops told the newspaper that she was in the bed of a creek with waterfalls on either side.

Finally, after 17 days of wandering, she saw a helicopter that had been sent to find her.

Her mother Julia Eller said that after her daughter had jogged three or four miles on the trail, she laid down on a log to rest, and when she got up, was completely disoriented. She fell 20 feet off a steep cliff, fracturing her leg and tearing the meniscus in her knee, according to her friend Katie York.

Amanda Eller was rescued from the Makawao Forest Reserve in Maui, Hawaii, on May 24, 2019, after going missing 16 days earlier. "I was bawling like a baby". She even slept in pig beds to keep warm during the nights.

Eller told her father she was able to walk for the first five to eight days but at some point, she fell into a ravine, which was about seven miles from where she left her auto. Your work, determination and sacrifice has helped return her to her loving family.

"I really felt the only thing to do was bring awareness to the fact that she did come here for a period of time and impacted the lives of others and had good friends here", Olenik said.

"She's a trouper, man; she's a real warrior", her mom said.

"She's not somebody who is going to lay down and give up, that's for damn sure", Olenik said.
