Panasonic says has not stopped supplies to Huawei, still investigating

Their hesitance is due to uncertainty about Google's previous announcement that it would restrict Huawei's access to updates of the Android operating system in compliance with a United States ban. These companies told their employees they would stop selling components to Huawei until further notice, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Global tech firms, including chip suppliers, are cutting ties with China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd after the U.S. government put the world's largest telecom equipment maker on a trade blacklist citing national security concerns.

Within Huawei, fostering a new ecosystem of widely used apps to go with the operating system will be the biggest challenge and it would take at least two to three years, according to a person familiar with the matter.

On Monday, Google confirmed it was complying with a ban put in place by the Trump administration barring U.S. companies from supplying technology to Huawei.

Microsoft declined to comment on the situation.

The global version of the system could be ready in the first or second quarter of 2020, said Richard Yu, the head of Huawei's consumer business, told U.S. channel CNBC. The decision to place Huawei and its affiliates onto the Entity List had made it impossible for the company to buy any goods that were made in the US. The future of Huawei phones outside China looks in trouble without Android OS.

During a time when smartphone sales have been stagnant, Huawei also reported year-over-year growth of 50.3%.

To recap, last week the US Department of Commerce blacklisted Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies and 68 of its affiliates, which means that they now can not buy parts and components from partners in the US without government approval.

It's unclear whether Seoul would accept potential USA demands to block imports of Huawei products at risk of triggering retaliation from China, its biggest trade partner. The market is effectively a duopoly, with Android running on 87% of smartphones sold in the first quarter, and Apple's iOS running on nearly all of the rest, according to market research firm Canalys.

Jia Mo, an analyst at Singapore-based market research company Canalys, said the delayed product releases in certain markets will harm Huawei's smartphone business, but Huawei is working on its own mobile operating system, which can help relieve some pressure in the domestic market.

U.S. officials "fabricate lies to try to mislead the American people, and now they are trying to incite ideological opposition", he said, when asked about U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent criticism of Huawei.
