SpaceX launches 60 'Starlink' internet satellites into orbit

"Falcon 9 launches 60 Starlink satellites to orbit - targeting up to 6 Starlink launches this year and will accelerate our cadence next year to put ~720 satellites in orbit for continuous coverage of most populated areas on Earth". The spaceflight will be broadcast via the space company's website and YouTube.

The rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at about 10:30 p.m. local time (0230 GMT Friday), marking a milestone in a global enterprise aimed at generating cash for Musk's larger ambitions in space.

As the images from the landmark launch started pouring in, loyal followers of the SpaceX boss took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

"Standing down to update satellite software and triple-check everything again". "Always want to do everything we can on the ground to maximize mission success". That rocket has now been used three times, cementing SpaceX's capability in reusing rockets.

While boosting the satellite into orbit was the primary goal of the mission, SpaceX planned to recover the rocket's twice-flown first stage with landing on an off-shore droneship, the "Of Course I Still Love You", stationed in the Atlantic Ocean northeast of Cape Canaveral.

The space-based internet service is an important source of funding for the Hawthorne, California-based company, Musk has said. Unlike the final version, they won't be able to communicate with each other; they'll communicate with the center on earth and move accordingly. There is even a "small possibility" that none of the spacecraft will work.

SpaceX on Thursday launched a rocket carrying the first 60 satellites of its "Starlink" constellation, which is meant to provide internet from space and could one day number 12,000 satellites.

The satellites are equipped with star tracker navigation systems that allow SpaceX to pinpoint the satellites.

SpaceX is one of several private companies that have permission to fly an internet mega-constellation. In February, Airbus SE-backed OneWeb launched its own clutch of satellites, while LeoSat Enterprises and Canada's Telesat are also working to build data networks.

It took an hour after launch to deploy the 60 satellites into low earth orbit.
