Huawei to continue Android support

Huawei to continue Android support

With their future phones not likely to use Qualcomm chips or Google's Android beyond the AOSP, it's likely that Huawei will R&D their own chips to fill that void and their own fork of Android.

Only about two months ago Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei's consumer products division had told a German newspaper that the beleaguered Chinese smartphone brand had been prepping a mobile OS as a kind of Plan B if the company ever got cut off by Google from relying on Android, bgr.com reported.

In layman's, Huawei would lose access to Android updates for existing phones as well as access to Google services for any upcoming devices.

The Trump administration on Thursday added Huawei Technologies Co Ltd to a trade blacklist, immediately enacting restrictions that will make it extremely hard for the company to do business with USA counterparts. Google says it has taken steps to "comply with the recent USA government actions".

Lu Kang from the Chinese foreign ministry says his country will take measures to make sure its businesses' rights are safeguarded. In 2018, USA intelligence agencies cautioned against using devices from Huawei and ZTE.

"We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally", said the statement. This implies that effective immediately, there will be no more Android security updates for new and old devices of Huawei including the P30 and P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro, and a plethora of more devices. Google broadly confirmed the reports in a statement referring directly to the executive order and Huawei hasn't commented, though Mashable did reach out for comment. The move follows a US executive order that American companies stop doing business with any foreign company that harms national security interests. Nicole Peng, the vice president of mobility at tech market analyst firm Canalys stated: "It will be like an instant kill switch for Huawei's ambition to overtake Samsung in the global market".

Once the ban comes into effect, Huawei users may find themselves locked out of apps developed by Google, such as Gmail and the Google Play Store.

This will impact security updates as well as Google ecosystem apps such as Gmail, Google Maps and Chrome.

But future Huawei devices may be out of luck.

For Huawei users' questions regarding our steps to comply w/ the recent USA government actions: We assure you while we are complying with all United States gov't requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device.

Companies including Broadcom and Xilinx that supply programming and switching chips, a key component in manufacturing networking equipment, have also halted business with Huawei until further notice.
