Michigan's John Beilein To Coach Cleveland Cavaliers

Michigan's John Beilein To Coach Cleveland Cavaliers

Beilein is the winningest coach in MI history with a 278-150 record in 12 seasons.

Following successful runs at West Virginia and Michigan, Beilein is taking his first National Basketball Association job after agreeing Sunday night to a five-year contract that brings him to Cleveland. He played at what was then Wheeling College from 1971-75, and in 2015 was inducted into Wheeling Jesuit's Athletics Hall of Fame. He cares deeply about his players and others who work for him and around him. Two people familiar with the decision say Beilein has agreed to become head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It's always good to see your rival go through tough periods in terms of on-court success over the years which is why MI fans loved John L. Smith and Bobby Williams so much.

Beilein will take over a Cavaliers franchise that fired Tyronn Lue after an 0-6 start and opted not to bring back Larry Drew after the team finished 19-63. A key piece of Beilein's program after transferring to WVU from St. Bonaventure, Gansey has been a rising star in the Cleveland organization since 2011 and was promoted to an assistant general manager when Altman replaced David Griffin. "At the same time, I felt very strongly about this new and exciting opportunity with the Cavaliers".

Beilein helped mentor nine Wolverines selection in the NBA Draft: Darius Morris (2011, No. 41 by Los Angeles Lakers), Trey Burke (2013, No. 9 by Minnesota Timberwolves, draft-day trade to Utah Jazz), Tim Hardaway Jr.

And his record as a coach, 829-468. Cleveland's roster should get an upgrade in the draft and the Cavs are hoping for some more luck in Tuesday's lottery, where the victor will have a shot at Duke All-American Zion Williamson.

The Cavs will have a 14 percent chance at getting the No. 1 overall pick, which they've had three times since 2011.

Despite being the Wolverines' biggest basketball rivals, the Spartans are going to miss what Beilein did for the yearly matchups between the in-state schools. "Obviously we hope we get the best player".

The Cavs are taking a leap of faith that he can do it on a larger stage.
