Samsung Galaxy Fold not yet ready for shipping

Samsung Galaxy Fold not yet ready for shipping

Samsung has handled the Galaxy Fold debacle badly from start to finish, from the way it initially blamed reviewers for causing the screen damage, to the way it put pressure fix specialists iFixit to pull its critical teardown of the device from its site.

It closed Galaxy Fold pre-orders earlier due to what it said was "high demand". The company already postponed launch and we learned it would be ready by June. It has now apologized to customers who preordered its $1,980 smartphone and told them it will cancel many preorders automatically if it can not start shipping by the end of this month.

A Samsung spokesperson confirmed to Reuters it would have to cancel the orders after this date as per us regulations. For some users, it didn't work properly and led to multiple issues on the device.

My take: It's the Mobius strip of shipping dates!

However, the email also reiterated (in fluffy, pseudo-positive PR terms) that the company has no updates on progress with the redesign or any estimation of a revised ship date. For those who retain the order, they continue to hold a place in the queue.

In Samsung's case, this means it has to ship or gain consent to the delay by May 31st to retain the order. But you might want to cancel anyway and wait until first reviews confirm that the durability issues have been resolved.

That email, which can be seen over on the Galaxy Fold subreddit, says pre-orders that haven't been confirmed by May 31st will be automatically canceled, assuming the phone hasn't shipped by then.

Below, there's a button customers need to click to confirm they'd like to keep their order.

Right now, there's a ton of uncertainty surrounding the Galaxy Fold and whether it'll actually ship. There's more than a slight hint that there could be a lengthy delay or even a cancelled launch.
