D'Angelo Russell Cited for Marijuana Possession at LaGuardia Airport in NYC

Brooklyn Nets All-Star point guard D'Angelo Russell was detained Wednesday at LaGuardia Airport when a search of his luggage by TSA personnel revealed that he was transporting a small amount of marijuana.

"The marijuana was concealed inside a beverage can with a hidden compartment".

If Russell pleads guilty or is convicted of marijuana possession, he would be asked to enter a substance abuse program.

In a statement, the Nets said they were aware of the situation and gathering more information.

A suspicious can of iced tea was allegedly found in D'Angelo Russell's bag at LaGuardia.

A player would get suspended after a third violation of the marijuana policy.

Russell was en route to Louisville, Kentucky, where his father lives.

The NBA does not test players over the off-season, which for Russell, began last week after the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Nets in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The former No. 2 overall draft pick of the Lakers, Russell has career averages of 16.5 points and 5.1 rebounds, while shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from 3-point range over four National Basketball Association seasons. ESPN reported Thursday the Nets are expected to try to hammer out a deal with Russell before he even hits the marketplace on July 1.

D'Angelo Russell had a breakout season this year with the Brooklyn Nets which allowed him to finally shake off the reputation of being a "bust" that he had acquired while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. 'So I'm not going to play that role like I don't know what could possibly happen.
