Kentucky Derby favorite ruled out of race

Kentucky Derby favorite ruled out of race

Bob Baffert-trained horses Game Winner, Roadster and Improbable are among the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby with Omaha Beach out. The Wood has not produced the victor of the Kentucky Derby since 2000 when Fusaichi Pegasus crossed the line first at Churchill Downs.

Omaha Beach had breezed impressively over the Churchill Downs track for a week, including a stout five-furlong workout over the weekend. Now he's out of the Kentucky Derby.

This is pretty stunning news, and we will update when there is more information out there.

Bodexpress (30-1) draws into the Kentucky Derby field in post position 20, and all horses outside Omaha Beach (13-20) will move over one position. All three are entered by Bob Baffert, who past year became only the second trainer in history to saddle more than one Triple Crown victor when Justify completed the rare sweep of the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. It's generally not life- or career-threatening and is typically corrected with minor surgery.

"It's been a devastating thing, but we have to do what's right for the horse", said Mandella, who has never won the Derby. Trainer Richard Mandella said the ailment would sideline Omaha Beach for about three weeks. Though his attitude and performance during the gallop was unchanged from previous mornings, a scope revealed the entrapped epiglottis.

There's been a massive change to the Kentucky Derby just three days ahead of the race. "We'll have to figure out a whole new game plan".

Omaha Beach might not be the only scratch for Saturday's race. McLaughlin said if Haikal can't train on Friday morning, he'd take the colt out of the race.

The 2019 Kentucky Derby will begin at 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, May 4th, on NBC.
