Multiple People Shot At California Synagogue

The situation unfolded at Chabad of Poway synagogue before noon, the San Diego Sheriff's Department's Poway station said on Twitter.

At least four victims were taken to hospital, according to local channel KGTV 10News.

Shortly after the shooting, deputies reported that one man had been detained for questioning in connection to the shooting.

According to the synagogue's website, the congregation were hosting a Passover Holiday Celebration that began at 11 am and was set to end at 7pm with a final Passover meal.

A suspect, described only as a man, has been detained for questioning, the sheriff's office said. "Remain clear of the area as this investigation will take several hours", the tweet said.

Poway, about 20 miles north of San Diego, has about 48,000 residents.

Additionally, the incident comes six months to the day after a gunman stormed the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh killing 11 people in what was the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in USA history.
