‘Do YOU have a daughter?’: Youngest Christchurch survivor ask Prince William

Speaking in the room where the gunman struck at Al Noor mosque, the Duke of Cambridge said he could not believe it when he found out a terror attack had been carried out New Zealand, a country he had been visiting since before he could walk.

On the second day, he met survivors of the terrorist attack last month at the Masjid Al Noor mosque. "A terrorist attempted to sow division and hatred in a place that stands for togetherness and selflessness", the duke said in a speech to about 160 people.

Hundreds of Australians and New Zealanders travel to Gallipoli each year to attend a dawn commemoration at Anzac Cove, where the troops landed.

"He thought he could redefine what this space was", Prince William said.

"In a moment of acute pain, you stood up and stood together".

William also met Alen's father Wasseim, who was also wounded in the mosque shootings.

"It can reveal depths that you did not know you had", the royal noted, offering insight into his own experiences.

The prince, who supports the charity Child Bereavement UK, added, "The startling weight of grief can burst any bubble of complacency in how you live your life, and help you to live up to the values you espouse".

Thousands of people gathered to commemorate Anzac Day in Perth.

"People of all faiths and backgrounds can learn a great deal from how the Muslim families affected by the 15th of March attacks rallied around their loved ones", a quote attributed to the Duke of Cambridge said alongside the photo.

Kensington Palace tweeted a video of the private meeting, in which the duke can be seen sitting at the bedside of five-year-old Alen Alsati at Starship Children's Hospital.

With New Zealand still on alert, security during the visit has been tight, with little of the fanfare that usually accompanies royal visits.

"As a nation, we are still grieving for the loss", said Rear Admiral James Gilmour, Commander Joint Forces New Zealand.

He also met police and ambulance staff in Christchurch, some of whom were the first on the scene after the shootings.

William - who also visited Christchurch just weeks after the devastating February 2011 quake which claimed 185 lives - will end his brief visit later Friday when he lays a wreath at the natural disaster memorial site.

The date of the Gallipoli landing now serves as a national day of remembrance honoring all fallen veterans from the two countries.
