Putin and Kim shake hands for the first time

"Ceaselessly bolstering and developing strategic and traditional relations between North Korea and Russia.is my and my government's firm and unwavering position", Kim said.

President Putin told Kim Jong-un he supports ongoing efforts to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula and wants to boost economic ties.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un attend an official reception following their talks in Vladivostok, Russia, April 25, 2019.

"As the world is focused on the Korean peninsula, I think we will hold a very meaningful dialogue".

Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, toasts with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un after their talks in Vladivostok, Russia, on Thursday.

The Kremlin tried hard to present Kim Jong Un's first ever visit to Russian Federation as an historic event aimed at proving how important Moscow is in the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula - especially after the failure of US-North Korean talks in Hanoi two months ago.

"North Korea will not give up the only guarantee of the survival of the North Korean state and its regime", Trenin said.

The pair met on an island off the port on Russia's Pacific port. Some experts believe that Kim Jong eagerly wants to consolidate his ties with Russian Federation in the wake of his reportedly failed summit with US President Donald Trump over denuclearisation.

The pair shook hands and smiled broadly outside the university campus where they are holding the talks.

"Today, military tensions have been reduced significantly", said President Moon, who was named the Asian Person of the Year last year by the ANN, in recognition of his efforts to bring the United States and North Korea together to defuse the escalating war of words between the two sides.

Both countries, North Korea and Russian Federation, have been facing USA sanctions since long time.

Putin, who did not elaborate on what kind of guarantees Kim wanted, said Russian Federation supported the USA call for complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. According to analysts, Putin is expected to push the North Korean leaders to restart six party talks aimed at a peaceful resolution to North Korea's weapons program.

But instead of collapse - like in Hanoi - this meeting ended in a champagne reception with the two leaders and their delegations serenaded by a Cossack choir as they tucked into beetroot soup and reindeer dumplings.

Dmitri Trenin, the director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, said ahead of Thursday's talks that Putin will likely encourage Kim to continue constructive talks with the US, reflecting Russia's own worry about the North nuclear and missile programs. After a brief delay while the train had to be repositioned to line up with the red carpet laid out on the platform, he disembarked and headed in a convoy of limousines and minivans across a bridge linking mainland Vladivostok to Russky island, the summit venue.

However February's talks in Hanoi broke down after the two world superpowers were unable to reach an agreement to lift sanctions in exchange for North Korea abandoning its nuclear and missile programs.
