How India may have given Sri Lanka its most stark warning

Hundreds more remain in hospital.

"'Those who carried out the attack that targeted citizens belonging to the alliance countries and Christians in Sri Lanka are fighters with the Islamic State, ' according to a statement on IS news agency Amaq carried by SITE, which tracks jihadist groups".

"Their thinking is that Islam can be the only religion in this country", Ruwan Wijewardene told reporters.

Mr Wijewardene said numerous suspects were "well educated and come from upper middle class and so they are financially independent".

While Abu Ubaida was identified as an operative for the NTJ, officials feel that a much bigger operation was behind the attacks.

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka says the FBI is on the ground in the country to help assist its investigation into the Easter suicide bombings that killed 359 people.

Teplitz called that breakdown in communication "incredibly tragic".

In all, nine people are believed to have blown themselves up in Sunday, either during attacks or when police attempted to arrest them.

It came as more CCTV images emerged yesterday of one of the suicide bombers calmly walking up to St Sebastian's Church in Negombo before detonating his device, killing more than 100 worshippers. At its height, suicide bombers struck many times in the capital Colombo.

Sixty suspects have been arrested over the blasts so far.

"We've been following up on this claim, there were suspicions that there were links with [IS]", he added.

Despite a weakened presence in places such as Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State terrorist group remains a serious threat, said Aaron Cohen, a counter-terrorist and security expert, on "Fox & Friends" Wednesday.

It provided no evidence for the claim but shared an image on social media of eight men purported to be behind the attack.

But attacks organised or coordinated by Isis have been claimed faster, with detail and sometimes seen the group put out gory videos and footage from the scene.

NBC News: "Sri Lanka was warned about terrorist plot weeks ago" - "Sri Lankan authorities were warned about a terrorist plot two weeks before a series of Easter Sunday blasts that killed at least 290 people, government officials confirmed Monday". It is possible the group's involvement reorientated Hashmi's network away from bombs directed at destroying major Buddhist monuments and towards targets more closely associated with its global jihadist ideology. Teplitz said USA officials had not been made aware either. "We informed the authorities concerned after that", the official said.

A Danish billionaire lost three of his children in the attacks, a spokesman for his company said.

Information coming from lawmakers and government officials since Sunday has often been contradictory.

People gather around a television in a cafe showing Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's address to the nation following Easter Sunday terror attacks in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Wednesday, April 24, 2019. He also pledged "a complete restructuring" of the security forces.

Mr Wijewardene suggested on Tuesday the bombings were retaliation for the attack on mosques in New Zealand in March. A suspected white supremacist has been charged with murder in connection to the shootings.
