College student dies after falling 40 feet from campus clock tower

A university student plummeted to her death from a 40ft bell tower while trying to take Instagram photos of the NY skyline.

Sydney Monfries, 22, a senior at New York City's Fordham University, died Sunday as a result of the injuries she sustained when she fell inside the campus' famed Keating Hall tower.

"Fordham will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously, which we will present to her parents at the appropriate time".

Sydney Monfries, a journalism student at New York's Fordham University, plummeted 12m from the campus' clock tower early Sunday morning.

The father was seen sobbing as he left the hospital with one of the priests a short time later.

A student, named only as Dave, who met Sydney and her friends hours before the tragedy, said: "My roommate was with them".

Students were then told they needed to take a photo outside one of the top windows with against the skyline. This is the first fall inside the clock tower, she said, noting that the university officials have sometimes given tours of the tower to "satisfy students' curiosity about it, and reduce the likelihood that they would attempt to enter the structure without authorization".

School president Joseph McShane confirmed the tragic news in a letter to students later that evening.

Reports added that Monfries had hailed from Portland, Oregon, before attending the school.

Emergency responders found Monfries unconscious inside the tower at about 3:17 a.m. local time with a low pulse and trauma to her head, The Post reported.

Gina Vergel, a university spokeswoman, told The Post that the door to the clock tower is always locked and that only facilities and public safety staff should be able to access it.

Shortly before she died, Sydney uploaded a video to Snapchat from inside the bell tower.

For many Rose Hill students, the allure of the clock tower has become irresistible. I'm not sure if it's a tradition. Students say sneaking into the university's most recognizable building at night has always been a tradition for Fordham seniors.

Freshman Grayson Brown, 19, told the Post his mother sent him a text Sunday that said "stay out of the bell tower!"
