European Union commissioner: No-deal Brexit 'simply crazy'

European Union commissioner: No-deal Brexit 'simply crazy'

The Prime Minister met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin this afternoon for a working lunch.

And he said to Labour MPs who support the Bill: "Understand the damage you are doing to this institution".

While the talks were taking place in London, May undertook a diplomatic push in Berlin and Paris in a bid to secure another extension to the negotiating process, despite being unable to present the credible alternative Brexit plan the European Union said it required to sanction such a move.

On Monday evening, Parliament passed a bill brought by Labour MP Yvette Cooper, which aims to force the prime minister to request a Brexit extension rather than leave the European Union without a deal.

"Furthermore, in the event of a continued stalemate, such a longer extension would allow the United Kingdom to rethink its Brexit strategy", said Mr Tusk.

The cross-party move brought forward by Yvette Cooper and others led to Mrs May tabling a Commons motion for debate on Tuesday setting June 30 as the extension date.

In a bid to end the deadlock with Labour, the Prime Minister is considering offering MPs a vote on whether to hold a referendum on any deal agreed on Brexit, according to the Daily Telegraph.

EU Farm Commissioner Hogan was setting out contingency plans in the agriculture sector for a no-deal Brexit to make sure that it impacts farmers as little as possible.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, also said the length of any delay will depend on the rationale May presents in Brussels on Wednesday.

On Monday night, MPs and peers backed a new law to extend the Brexit process, and cross-party talks are expected to continue in the hope of finding a compromise.

The PM also updated Merkel on the ongoing discussions with the opposition Labour party.

It allows the government to seek any extension from 22 May onwards.

The latest round of talks will include Mrs May's de facto deputy, Cabinet Office minister David Lidington, and Chancellor Philip Hammond from the Government side, with shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer and shadow chancellor John McDonnell from Labour.

The bill received its Royal Assent from the Queen on Monday night, and Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom told MPs that this meant there will be a government motion on Tuesday asking the House to approve the PM's request to the European Union to delay Brexit until 30 June.
