Trump orders firing of U.S. Secret Service chief

Alles was told that he should be prepared to leave his post as head of the Secret Service as part of that transition.

The directors of the United States Secret Service is leaving his position, NBC News reports.

The departure of Alles follows the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and Trump's decision to withdraw Ronald Vitiello, his nominee to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in favor of someone "tougher".

Mr Alles reported directly to Ms Nielsen, who announced her resignation on Sunday, after facing increasing pressure to do so from Mr Trump.

A law enforcement official tells ABC News Alles was told a couple of weeks ago that he would be let go as part of a broader house cleaning at Homeland Security.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump has selected career Secret Service official James Murray to lead the agency, saying he will assume the role next month.

The Secret Service also came under scrutiny last week after a Chinese woman carrying electronic devices bluffed her way through security checks at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. "Very happy with them", Trump said during a White House event when asked by reporters about the Mar-a-Lago trespasser. The announcement of his departure comes a day after the ouster of DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

A number of officials in the Trump administration are serving in an acting capacity, including the president's own chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney.

Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Francis Cissna and Office of the General Counsel's John Mitnick are two other officials expected soon to leave the department.

Interim secretaries are also in place at the Departments of Defence, the Department of the Interior and the Office of Management and Budget, among other federal agencies.
