Hundreds of cases of drug-resistant superbug reported in NYC

Hundreds of cases of drug-resistant superbug reported in NYC

According to The New York Times, Candida auris is a fungus that can cause life-threatening infections when it enters a person's bloodstream.

The fungus is spreading around the globe, infecting patients in hospitals and nursing homes in countries across continents including in Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia.

The federal centers for disease control and prevention have now added this new fungus to a list of germs deemed as "urgent threats".

Some C. auris infections have been resistant to all three main classes of antifungal medications, making them hard to treat.

The first reported case of C. auris occurred in the United States in 2013, when a 61-year-old woman with respiratory failure came to NY from the United Arab Emirates, according to the Times.

A year ago in the month of May, an elderly man was admitted to the Brooklyn branch of Mount Sinai Hospital for abdominal surgery and to the hospital's surprise, the man's blood test revealed he was infected with a newly discovered germ as deadly as it was mysterious, TOI reports.

But he was discharged against medical advice and returned to Bangladesh after 10 days. The first involved a 24-year-old Bangladeshi male who flew to Singapore to seek medical treatment, while the second involved a 69-year-old U.S. male citizen who was suffering from a lung disease.

She was treated at an Indian hospital and later transferred to a hospital here for further treatment.

Tests revealed that the fungus was everywhere in the patient's room, and the situation so serious that the hospital needed special cleaning equipment and had to dismantle several ceilings and floor tiles to make it disappear from its surface.

His condition deteriorated rapidly and he died shortly after.

Royal Brompton Hospital alerted the British government and infected patients when the fungus could not be removed, but made no public announcement to warn the public about the outbreak, The New York Times said.

According to the letter in the medical journal here, the three cases all appeared to be imported.

Dr. Lynn Sosa, an expert on epidemiology, said she sees Candida Auris as the most serious and significant threat among drug-resistant infections: "It's invincible and hard to diagnose", said Dr. Sosa, who says almost half of patients who die, may die within 90 days.

In a recent feature on the spread of the fungus, the New York Times reported that some of the symptoms of C. auris include fever and chills.
