Netanyahu says if re-elected he will extend Israeli sovereignty over West Bank

Palestine remains only partially recognized as a state and claims the territories of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Explaining his approach toward a two-state solution to voters on Sunday, O'Rourke acknowledged the United States was working with imperfect partners. Trump has cited his moving of the USA embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and his decision to pull the US out of the Iran nuclear deal as reasons for Jewish voters to leave the Democratic party and support him and the GOP instead.

Speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition gathering in Las Vegas, Trump said he made the snap decision during a discussion with his top Middle East peace advisers, including the US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

In its final days, Israel's parliamentary election appears too close to call, as Netanyahu and his Likud party face a strong challenge from a popular former army chief, Benny Gantz, and his Blue and White party.

Trump has teased the long-promised USA peace proposal as the "deal of the century", but it will undoubtedly be as Netanyahu-sided as everything else the Trump administration has done when it comes to Israel.

His remarks on Saturday were viewed in Israeli media as an attempt to draw right-wing votes rather than an immediate change of policy.

Graham also suggested the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate would vote in a month or so to formally recognize Israeli sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights and force Democrats to go on the record on the issue.

In the television interview, Netanyahu vowed not to divide Jerusalem or "uproot any settlement" and said he would "ensure that we will control the territory west of the Jordan River", meaning the entire West Bank.

Another 200,000 Israelis live in East Jerusalem, part of the West Bank that Israel annexed shortly after the 1967 war. "We will move to the next stage, the imposing of Israeli sovereignty".

After Omar apologized for her words, Trump, during a Cabinet meeting in the White House, said, "I think she should either resign from Congress or she should certainly resign from the House Foreign Affairs Committee", per reporting from CNN.

"For the past 10 years, Netanyahu has blocked applying Israeli law to even a centimeter of land", Bennett tweeted.

The Israeli settlements - which include large subdivisions and cities full of middle-class villas - have long complicated efforts for a two-state solution: Palestinians have said the settlements would make it impossible to create a viable state in the West Bank, as NPR's Greg Myre has reported.

Saeb Erekat, a veteran former Palestinian negotiator, said he held the worldwide community, especially the Trump administration, responsible for Israel's policies.

Trump's predecessors as president publicly discouraged the expansion of settlements, arguing that they made it harder to negotiate a viable Palestinian state, viewed by administrations from both USA parties as Israel's likeliest route to peace.
