Health officials confirm measles case in Dallas County

Oakland County has been hit the hardest with all but one of the state's measles cases, though an outlier was confirmed in Wayne County last month. Infected individuals range in age from 8 months to 63 years.

Ottawa health officials are urging residents to check their immunization records, as the city's been hit with its first case of measles.

The state Department of Health and Human Services issued an update Friday on the state's measles outbreak and, as part of that, listed three locations in Sturgis as possible exposure sites. The virus, which is spread by air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, can remain in the air for up to two hours after the infected individual leaves.

People who are sick should not attend settings such as crèche, school, work or religious gatherings until they have recovered from illness, they added. A second vaccine dose is given before the start of kindergarten, between ages 4 and 6.

In January Washington state's governor, Jay Inslee, declared a state of emergency after officials confirmed 31 cases of measles.

Adults who didn't receive two vaccine doses in childhood should also get at least one dose, she said.

Due to lower levels of MMR vaccine uptake in children and young people in some countries, measles continues to circulate. The best protection is to be vaccinated with MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine. Individuals born before 1957 are presumed to be immune to measles. They are tied to a measles case in Indiana. A single dose of measles vaccine protects about 95 percent of children, but after two doses, nearly 100 percent are immune. The fever can get as high as 105 degrees.

Measles symptoms usually start at around 10 days after contact with an infectious person.

In a day to four days, a red rash normally appears on the face and spreads across the body.

On 26 March, Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock called for new legislation to force social media companies to remove content promoting false information about vaccines.

If you are experiencing the symptoms of measles, stay home and call your healthcare provider right away before going to the doctor's office.
