Ocasio-Cortez mocks Trump's tax return response: 'We didn't ask you'

Before a meeting with military leaders at the White House yesterday, President Trump responded.

The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Richard Neal of MA, formally requested six years of Trump's personal tax returns and some of his business tax returns on Wednesday, exercising his authority under a 1924 law enacted in response to the Teapot Dome scandal.

It's the first time in 45 years that such a demand has been made for a sitting president's tax information.

"What I can tell you is the president has filled out hundreds of pages of a financial disclosure form which puts all of his business dealings in that, like every other member of government has to do, and it gives you a great look at the president's financial holdings, his business, and how successful he was over his lifetime", Sanders said.

"We expect the full report and underlying evidence and will subpoena it if necessary", a House Judiciary Committee aide said Thursday, adding that there is no timeline for the chairman to serve his subpoena.

The president again vowed to release his tax returns in a January 2016 interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," telling host Chuck Todd, "We're working on that now".

"But until such time as I'm not under audit, I would not be inclined to do that", he said in response to a reporter's question about the committee's request.

And on Wednesday afternoon, the House Ways and Means Committee formally kicked off its pursuit of the president's tax returns, capping what has been the most aggressive week of this Congress' oversight of the administration to date.

Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, the top Republican on the Ways and Means panel, urged Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to reject Neal's request, calling it an "abuse" of authority from Democrats on the committee. The Ways and Means chairman's request was expected but nonetheless represented a significant escalation in House Democrats' wide-ranging probes of Trump and his administration.

Under the code, it says "the secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request".

One of them, the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, is an umbrella entity that controls more than 100 other businesses, including his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.

The committee said in its statement that Neal insisted the request "is not about impeachment", but legitimate oversight issues.

"We expect the IRS commissioner to comply with the law and provide those returns", Kildee told CNN.

Mnuchin suggested in testimony to Congress last month that he would protect Trump's privacy if the House Democrats requested his tax returns.

The president signalled he would not want his returns provided to Congress.
