British MPs reject all alternative Brexit options again

British MPs reject all alternative Brexit options again

The letter, signed by 170 members of the Prime Minister's party, called on her to bring her deal back to Parliament for a fourth vote, with the threat of a general election if it is rejected again, the newspaper said.

Two of Britain's biggest carmakers, BMW and Peugeot, both said that, despite the delay to Brexit, they would go ahead next week with factory shutdowns that had been deliberately scheduled to minimise disruption to their cross-border supply lines in the event of a no-deal departure on March 29.

They were voting on four Brexit alternatives tabled for the second round of the indicative vote process. Parliament has voted down May's deal three times. Tricky for Labour MPs who don't want to back freedom of movement, but if selected could attract significantly more votes than last time.

A third proposal calling for any Brexit deal Britain strikes with the European Union to be put to a public referendum was defeated 292-280.

"Since it took two and three-quarter years for the Government to get what it had negotiated defeated three times, it's a little bit harsh on Parliament, when it started the process last Wednesday, for not having immediately solved the problem in 24 hours", Mr Benn said.

Northern Ireland's DUP - which has propped up Mrs May's minority government - also continues to oppose the deal. "Settle that and then move forward, offer the public the wide range of choices that political parties do. let's get on with doing this job in the first place".

UK Conservative Party chairperson Brandon Lewis.

Today MPs will hold a second round of indicative votes, after they failed to find an agreement on the several Brexit options they examined on Thursday.

The second series of votes on Brexit options - known as "indicative" votes, created to see what MPs might support amid the deadlock - were held on Monday evening in the House of Commons, the main decision-making body of the UK Parliament, following hours of debate. A customs union with the EU is thought to be the most likely preference. One option would essentially mean that Britain would surrender its ability to control European immigration. "The government's position is we believe the best way to respect the referendum is to deliver the deal".

Agreeing to a customs union could trigger a mass walk out by conservative ministers.

British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on 30 March.

"We should be doing everything we can to leave the European Union in good order as quickly as we can, as we said in our manifesto and as we've said to Parliament", Lewis said.

May has summoned her Cabinet for a marathon meeting Tuesday to thrash out the options.

MP Nigel Evans told The Observer: 'Theresa May can not call an election, she can not be the leader who would lead us into it.

As a result of Friday's vote, the United Kingdom is now scheduled to leave the European Union on April 12, regardless of whether the two sides have reached an agreement to cushion the impact, which has led to concerns about crippling tariffs, border gridlock and shortages of food and medicines.

The move comes as Mrs May struggles to contain the rising tensions with her Cabinet as the clock counts down to the latest European Union deadline on April 12.

May's government and her party, however, remain in open conflict, with lawmakers warning the prime minister about damage to the party should she opt for a "softer" Brexit.

But Downing Street later said this was not an "inevitability".

All sides of the Parliament remain deeply divided over each of the many alternatives, a final list of which will be chosen by Commons Speaker John Bercow for a vote later on Monday night.

Another defeat would spell the end of the agreement, unless she attached the withdrawal agreement to a plan for a softer future relationship.
