Valve unveils its own virtual reality headset: the Valve Index

Valve unveils its own virtual reality headset: the Valve Index

The teaser image doesn't reveal too much about the headset other than giving us a simple glimpse at Index, accompanied by the line "Upgrade your experience" - how elusive.

Valve is finally getting into virtual reality hardware, as the company teases a new VR HMD called Valve Index.

Now, Valve appears to be building a headset too.

Even though it was heavily rumored, I'm a little surprised we're seeing Valve's headset so soon. It looks very much like a new VR headset, and it matches with a set of leaks and trademark filings we began to see late previous year. That report hinted to Valve's headset supporting a wider, 135-degree field-of-view (FOV), as opposed to the roughly 110-degree FOV of the original HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

The news came on Friday in the form of a single teaser image, shown above, of a headset with the phrase "Valve Index" written on its front.

We'll have to wait until May for more concrete information, although that could simply be the date for an official reveal event rather than an actual launch window.
