Trump wants GM CEO 'to do something quickly' to reopen OH plant

"As President Green said, President Trump should support my American Cars, American Jobs Act to keep auto jobs in OH, and GM CEO Mary Barra owes the workers from this highly productive plant an explanation for her comments", said Brown.

After General Motors announced last November that it would "unallocate" and idle four US manufacturing plants, it put the company squarely in President Trump's crosshairs.

In a tweet, Trump said "Because the economy is so good, General Motors must get their Lordstown, Ohio, plant open, maybe in a different form or with a new owner, FAST!"

Earlier in November, General Motors announced plans to cut 15,000 jobs and close manufacturing plants in Lordstown, plants in MI, and Ontario, Canada.

Contrary to President Trump's claims, Barra has not officially pointed to United Auto Workers (UAW) as the reason for Lordstown's closure.

But he demanded, "Why wait, start them now!"

'I am not happy that it is closed when everything else in our Country is BOOMING, ' Trump tweeted on Sunday.

"We remain open to talking with all affected stakeholders, but our main focus remains on our employees and offering them jobs in our plants where we have growth opportunities", GM said.

Neither Green nor GM immediately responded to CNBC's requests to comment on Trump's tweets.

GM says Cruze sales in foreign countries have remained stable, fallen less sharply than in the US or even increased, as is the case in South America. The union represents workers at the Lordstown plant. "G.M. let our Country down, but other much better vehicle companies are coming into the droves".

Green, who's been a critic of the president in the past, said Trump had pledged to preserve jobs in Trumbull County, where GM's Lordstown plant is located, but the unemployment rate there was 7.7 percent in January.

Reopening Lordstown to manufacture another model is not something possible on a whim; Lordstown was retooled in 2012 specially to produce the Cruze, and retooling the plant again for another model would require an investment of tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars-cash GM is setting aside to keep itself technologically up-to-date. The company also announced it would close auto parts factories in MI and Maryland. The company also intends to close four other North American plants by early next year.
