"Captain Marvel" Scores Impressive Opening Weekend At Box Office

With a black lead, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse past year became the highest December-opening animated film in history, bringing in $35.4 Million over the course of its opening weekend. That's also the second-largest global opening ever for a Marvel Studios film, behind only last year's Avengers: Infinity War.

As is sadly becoming increasingly common with female- or minority-led films, particularly superhero films, Captain Marvel faced an organized campaign by online trolls to dissuade people from seeing the film by leaving poor audience reviews for it on Rotten Tomatoes before it was even released in theaters.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part held onto the #4 spot with $3.8 million for a domestic total of $97.1 million, and a worldwide cume of $164.4 million.

Captain Marvel is also the first Marvel superhero movie that's headlined exclusively by a female superhero.

It's the latest in a series of strong promotional activities for Captain Marvel, including a double Danvers situation at the European Gala, the film's tie-wearing cat star at the world premiere, and these nostalgic optical illusion movie posters which will either delight or infuriate you.

"If you want to just enjoy it, you totally can, but there a lot of aspects to it that I think are worth talking with your friends and family about".

"I don't know how it's any different".

"I'm kind of over the 'First female blah blah blah, ' and 'Wow, maybe women can actually do the same things that dudes can do - what a insane concept!'"

'What they believe is that the more you diversify perspective and experience in front of and behind the camera, the better the movies and the stories are, ' Taff explained.

"She definitely pushed us higher, further, faster", Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff said of Captain Marvel.
