Facebook Promises Encrypted Messaging (and Privacy-Abusing Business as Usual)

Facebook Promises Encrypted Messaging (and Privacy-Abusing Business as Usual)

"So we won't keep messages or stories around for longer than necessary to deliver the service or longer than people want them".

Zuckerberg framed the strategy as a user choice, including the phrase "people want" six times in his blog post, and citing the fast growth of ephemeral and private communication on his company's services.

Secure data storage: Data shouldn't be stored in countries with weak records on privacy and freedom of expression. "As part of our ongoing commitment to privacy, we are removing the Facebook SDK App Events component from both the Android and iOS apps in the next version releases".

Zuckerberg said he sees the future of communication shifting to private, encrypted services, and the company plans to build on WhatsApp's progress in this area to extend such features to its other services.

These changes won't change anything about how Facebook collects data on its users on other fronts besides messaging, with some critics saying Facebook still needs to give more control to users relating to how their data is shared.

Additionally, Facebook is working towards making user posts short-lived i.e. messages would disappear automatically after a period of time. Just this week, news reports resurfaced about how the company offered people a security feature known as two-factor authentification, which required users to share their phone numbers. He said the social platform would spend the coming years assuring that its WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook content is encrypted so that outsiders, and even Facebook, can not read it.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he believes secure, private messaging services will become more popular than open platforms and plans to transform Facebook into such a platform. Here's what he thinks a privacy-focused social network could look like. Because the underlying encryption technology Facebook uses across apps is the same, it should not be fundamentally hard to allow users to chat securely across the site's services, Soltani said.

As Facebook attempts to make its interactions more streamlined and therefore easier for people to use, the company plans to make communication between the different platforms easier, allowing people to connect with each other in a simpler manner. "However, today if you want to message people on Facebook you have to use Messenger, on Instagram you have to use Direct, and on WhatsApp you have to use WhatsApp".

Public social networks will continue to be very important in people's lives - for connecting with everyone you know, discovering new people, ideas and content, and giving people a voice more broadly. Critics are anxious that this may never see the light of day, as has happened with many other announcements Facebook made as a response to backlash to its scandals.

In a few years, I expect future versions of Messenger and WhatsApp to become the main ways people communicate on the Facebook network.

This was a Zuckerberg who hadn't quite considered the myriad ways that bots, fake profiles, data miners, disinformation campaigns, and targeted advertising would provide a dark side to that casual mission statement.

However, in the 3,200-word statement released by Zuckerberg, he aims to mitigate issues revolving around Facebook's ability to be trusted for secure and private connections.

Mr Zuckerberg added that encrypted messaging will also create scope for new business tools, especially ones around online payments and commerce.
