Victor claims $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot in SC

The South Carolina resident who had the billion-dollar lottery ticket drawn in October has finally claimed their prize.

The victor of the lottery has made a decision to remain anonymous.

The victor chose the cash option of a one-time payment of $877,784,124.

The victor of the largest jackpot payout to a single victor in United States history has stepped forward.

The victor had up to 180 days to claim their prize, said a release from, a site devoted to lottery news.

The numbers drawn on October 23 were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and Mega Ball 5.

SC is one of a handful of states where winners can remain anonymous - a choice that winners often make to protect themselves from being targeted by criminals or unscrupulous people seeking money.

The sole victor, who wishes to remain anonymous, submitted a claim for the prize today, according to SC lottery officials.

"A simple act of kindness led to an unbelievable outcome." the lottery said in a release.

The unnamed person who bought that ticket reportedly let another customer ahead in line to buy a Mega Millions ticket.

The winning ticket was sold in Simpsonville, S.C. back on October 23, but since then the sole victor has remained in hiding.

The payout climbed to $1.5 billion after three months and 25 draws passed without a ticket that matched all six numbers.
