Lawmakers demand documents from White House for Trump investigation

The request comes on the same day House Democrats made a sweeping demand for documents from dozens of people with connections to Trump amid an investigation into potential obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power.

"It's very clear - 1,100 times he referred to the Mueller investigation as a witch hunt", Nadler said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" on Sunday.

The New York Democrat has repeatedly expressed his view in recent months that Trump either clearly obstructed justice, or attempted doing so, by seeking to curtail special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible Trump campaign collusion with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election.

FILE - Special counsel Robert Mueller, in charge of investigating Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign, departs Capitol Hill, in Washington, June 21, 2017.

Trump maintains that his campaign did not collude with Russian Federation and has repeatedly attacked the investigation, Mueller and the Mueller staff on Twitter. "I cooperate all the time with everybody", he said before adding: "You know the attractive thing?"

Monday's request is perhaps the most invasive move, demanding the White House and State Department make available anyone who was at Trump-Putin meetings, people who "have knowledge" of the talks, and anyone who's even seen or heard "readouts" of what transpired in the meetings.

Democrats, who took control of the House of Representatives in January, have vowed to open investigations into the president and White House.

Mark Zaid runs a national security-focused law firm in Washington, D.C. In an email, he explained that such wide-ranging inquiries are actually nothing new for presidential administrations.

Those receiving requests for documents include Trump's charity, business, campaign, and inaugural committee.

Republicans in Congress accuse Democrats of pursuing an impeachment agenda against Trump as part of a political strategy to reclaim the White House in the 2020 election. He emerged empty-handed from a high-profile summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on denuclearisation, and Mr Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, in three days of congressional evidence, publicly characterised the president as a "conman" and "cheat". Our country is in crisis, and we need someone who knows how to bring people together and get things done.

Nadler sent letters Monday to 81 agencies, individuals and other entities related to Trump, including the Trump Organization, the Trump campaign, the Trump Foundation, the presidential inaugural committee, the White House, the Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and presidential aides, The New York Times reported.

The probe comes following mid-term elections in the U.S. that gave Democrats a majority over Trump's Republicans in the House.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is wrapping up his work into possible questions of Trump campaign collusion and obstruction in the Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"Well-respected thinkers believe that the more extreme Democrats go, the more middle of the road voters will gravitate to Trump."

"Over the last several years, President Trump has evaded accountability for his near-daily attacks on our basic legal, ethical, and constitutional rules and norms", Nadler said in a statement. But he said, "The claim that there is no evidence is factually wrong".
