Volvo's Polestar Unveils Electric Car Touted as Tesla Rival

"Polestar 2 is our first fully electric vehicle and first volume model", Polestar's chief executive officer, Thomas Ingenlath, said in statement on Wednesday.

According to Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath, turning to Google for its infotainment system is an example of his company avoiding the mistakes other vehicle makers have made by trying to build a system on their own.

Running on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the Polestar 2 boasts a 27-module battery pack integrated into its floor. Besides, the Volvo's first electric auto, a five-seater fastback, had also opened up for online pre-orders at such a pricing and a driving range, it could counter its rival Tesla's immensely popular Model 3.

The Polestar 2, aimed directly at the Tesla Model 3, has an expected range of 440km and boasts a 78 kWh battery pack. To add further sporty credentials, the Polestar 2 can be ordered with an additional Performance Pack that improves the driving dynamics with the help of Ă–hlins dampers, Brembo brakes and unique 20-inch forged wheels. So its entire infotainment system runs on this new Android setup and it looks really slick and easy to use. Those looking for a fun-to-drive electric auto can opt for the Performance Package which adds Ohlins dampers, Brembo brakes and 20-inch forged alloy wheels for better handling characteristics.

For charging, Polestar says it will provide customers with a "smart, convenient and extensive approach", with connected digital solutions available in-car and on mobile devices.

Polestar Spaces will be creative environments where potential buyers can physically interact with both our digital brand and Polestar product experts. Now, the company has taken the all-electric route for its next creation - the Polestar 2. The phone-as-key feature enables the auto to sense the driver on approach and gives the charging status and range onto the driver's phone. "Our avant-garde design has evolved from Polestar 1 into an edgier, bolder statement", says Maximilian Missoni, head of Design at Polestar.

They're serious about sustainability too, ensuring the standard interior is vegan-friendly with "progressive textiles" for their "forward-thinking audience".

In common with all Polestar cars, Polestar 2 will only be available for ordering online. Pre-orders are open now on the marque's website.

Polestar's chief executive Thomas Ingenlath told Reuters he hoped to sell "north of" 50,000 Polestar 2s annually within two or three years after deliveries start from the first half of 2020, but said how much production capacity the company sets up would depend on market conditions.

The vehicle will be formally unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The all-electric vehicle will be available for purchase in the US and Canada, Belgium, China, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
