Trump says former lawyer Cohen 'lied a lot' in Congress testimony

After hours of dramatic public testimony about U.S. President Donald Trump's business and political life, longtime Trump lawyer Michael Cohen returns Thursday to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers again. From the night before the public hearing, when Florida representative Matt Gaetz threatened Cohen on Twitter, to the minutes before the hearing, when Mark Meadows of North Carolina tried to delay the hearing, to the beginning of the session when ranking Republican member Jim Jordan came out of the gates accusing the Democrats of running a partisan investigation, it was clear the Republican party did not want the public to hear what Cohen had to say.

In his opening testimony, Cohen said, "questions have been raised about whether I know of direct evidence that Mr. Trump or his campaign colluded with Russian Federation".

Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., opened the hearing with a no-nonsense lecture to Cohen and later said he would "nail him to the cross" for lying to the committee. Cohen said, in addition, that the changes made by Trump's lawyers related to the length of time that the Trump Tower Moscow negotiations stayed alive-precisely the issue that Cohen lied to Congress about. The grand jury indictments that have produced guilty pleas from Trump's former campaign chair, his national security adviser, and a slew of other operatives are often confusing.

"And although I personally think he told the truth yesterday, I don't think any prosecutor would rely on Cohen as a star witness, particularly when you're talking about bringing charges against people close to the president, or even the president".

"I think there are still a number of other shoes to drop", Cummings told reporters after the hearing.

Cohen then testified that he recalled being in a room with Trump, perhaps in early June 2016, when Trump Jr. entered the room, leaned to his father and said in a low voice, "the meeting is all set".

He pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations involving illegal hush money and falsely testifying to Congress that Trump Tower Moscow negotiations had ended before the campaign. Trump would direct Cohen to call small business owners to whom Trump owed money and tell them they would receive no payment or a reduced payment. It was one of several moments during the hearing where Cohen's old bravado as Trump's fixer was seemingly gone.

He said Trump's lawyers were aware of his false statement and added that the president had publically lied about the project.

The Republicans who controlled Congress in the first two years of Trump's administration obscured the machinations of their leadership even as evidence of criminal activity mounted.

"I wouldn't use the word 'colluding.' Was there something odd about the back-and-forth praise with President Putin?"

Without directly mentioning Cohen's specific comments about the alleged conversation, Stone said Cohen's "statement is not true".

Cohen displayed a copy of a $35,000 check written to him on Trump's account, signed by Trump and dated August 1, 2017, while Trump was president.

Lanny Davis, a lawyer for Cohen, called the referral "baseless" and said Cohen had testified truthfully and "backed up much of his testimony with documents".

Republicans zeroed in on Cohen as someone who can not be believed because he lied to Congress before and is going to prison for it.

He recounted how Trump made him threaten schools he attended to not release his grades and SAT scores and denigrated blacks as "too stupid" to vote for him.

The messages - which USA authorities say were hacked by Russian intelligence - caused a damaging rift among Democrats by exposing how party officials preferred Mrs Clinton over her challenger for the presidential nomination, Bernie Sanders.

"Lying to the First Lady is one of my biggest regrets", Cohen said. When asked about that person publicly, Cohen said he believed it was the president's son.

But the president also said that he was a "little impressed" that Cohen told the committee that there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Mr. Trump is an enigma. Cohen said. "Yes, but I'm not really sure I can answer that question in terms of collusion".

Lawmakers on the House intelligence panel said Thursday that they expected the hearing with Cohen to go "deeper" than his public appearance did - and guessed that the interview would continue into the night.
