Robert Whittaker Forced Into Emergency Surgery From UFC 234 Injuries

UFC 234 will move forward with Israel Adesanya vs. Anderson Silva taking over the headlining slot.

Behind the first UFC paywall of the year is a middldweight title fight between champion, Robert Whittaker, and challenger, Kelvin Gastelum.

In a later statement, UFC said Whittaker had undergone emergency surgery due to a "severe abdominal injury".

UFC President Dana White later confirmed the 28-year-old would be undertaking surgery today.

It is understood Whittaker started complaining to his coaching staff late on Saturday evening of pain in his abdomen.

It marks the second time Whittaker has been forced to withdraw from a scheduled title fight in Australia.

It means the highly-anticipated No 1 contender match between Adesanya (15-0) and Brazilian legend Anderson Silva (34-8, 1nc) will now serve as the main event.

The new co-main is the lightweight matchup between Lando Vannata and Marcos Mariano.

"Due to change in the main event, customers may request a full refund of their purchased tickets at the point of sale".

Gastelum took to social media to let his fans know what was happening.

Whittaker last fought Yoel Romero in a five-round war at UFC 225 in Chicago.

Gastelum wished Whittaker a speedy recovery.

Of course, many wondered what would happen to his opponent, Gastelum, who earned this title opportunity after defeating the likes of former champion Michael Bisping and Ronald "Jacare" Souza in back-to-back fights.

If not Sonnen, then perhaps a fighter closer to home?
