Trump says to meet North Korea's Kim in Vietnam in late February

He added that his "relationship with Kim Jong Un is a good one". But there is not yet a concrete plan for how denuclearization could be implemented.

Since last year's Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, North Korea has returned three U.S. hostages, the remains of USA troops killed during the Korean war, and destroyed a missile testing site which experts suspect had been damaged to the point of no longer being operational.

Last month, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Trump and Kim Jong Un, need to move from "abstract" talk to "concrete" action the next time they meet, to speed up their peace process and bridge mistrust.

"As part of a bold new diplomacy, we continue our historic push for peace on the Korean Peninsula", he said during the speech, which focused on the country's foreign policy and economic status.

Trump did not say which Vietnamese city would host the two leaders but both the capital, Hanoi, and Danang have been considered as possibilities.

By helping Washington achieve its Korean policy goals, this could help fulfil Vietnam's desire for closer relations with the United States, both to encourage trade and investment and serve as a strategic counterweight to China.

The presidential Blue House of South Korea, which plays a facilitating role between the United States and North Korea, welcomed Trump's announcement and expressed hope for progress on improving relations.

Kim has also criticised the US for maintaining and implementing sanctions on Pyongyang, warning in his New Year's address that they could "block the path to denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula forever".

President Donald Trump bragged about preventing "a major war" with North Korea. Vietnam was South Korea's fourth-largest trading partner a year ago, according to Vietnamese and South Korean media reports.

"It can be your miracle in North Korea as well".

US envoy Stephen Biegun is due to meet his North Korean counterpart Kim Hyok Chol on Pyongyang on Wednesday, as he attempts to push forward preparations for the summit and advance a plan to reinvigorate talks about denuclearization.

"North Korea would also feel confident that Vietnam's security apparatus could secure Kim's protection", he said.

Denuclearizing North Korea is something that has eluded the US for more than two decades, since it was first learned that North Korea was close to acquiring the means for nuclear weapons.

CNN first broke the story last week, citing a senior administration official familiar with the matter.

"The summit will help the world understand more about Vietnam".

"I don't think the Vietnam model is ideal for North Korea, but it shows what's possible".

President Trump has tried to downplay North Korea's national security threat, writing on Twitter last week, "North Korea relationship is best it has ever been with U.S. No testing, getting remains, hostages returned".
