Booker replied that it doesn't matter if he looks authentic, because the policy changes he made were authentic.

The New Jersey Democrat, who is the second black candidate in a primary field that's already historically diverse, delivered his message of unity amid an era marked by bitter political division.

But he bears a hopeful, optimistic demeanor that could set him apart in the crowded Democratic field and contrast well with President Donald Trump's division.

Four years later, Booker ran again and won, cementing his status as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

They view his big-money ties as a liability and haven't forgotten his 2012 defence of Republican Mitt Romney's venture-capital background.

With an elite law degree in hand, Booker bypassed more lucrative opportunities and moved into an affordable housing complex in one of Newark's poorest neighborhoods, planning to lend his skills to a nonprofit. He has $4.1 million left in his campaign coffers that could also be used to assist his presidential run.
