House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff says his committee will investigate after President Donald Trump's longtime associate Roger Stone was arrested as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Stone is a key ally of Trump and he is reported to be arrested following an indictment by a federal grand jury on 24 January, as part of the Mueller probe.

Trump on Friday called the investigation the "Greatest Witch Hunt in the History of our Country!" Those indicted include 12 Russian military officers and 13 Russian nationals accused of leading a campaign to interfere in the United States election. And reading through the indictment, Stone is constantly involved in messy daytime soap-style drama and controversy. "Mueller seeks to criminalize normal political activities by Roger Stone while ignoring the blatantly illegal activities of the Clinton campaign and the Obama NSA, DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Stone, a 66-year-old political strategist, has been a controversial fixture in Republican circles for decades, since his days working for Richard Nixon. "He forgot to tell something to Congress and what it was was immaterial".

He is expected to appear in court later today. In releasing him on bond, a magistrate judge restricted Mr Stone's travel to South Florida, Washington and New York City and ordered him to avoid contact with witnesses.

Trump's lawyer also claimed the charges aren't connected to the president.

The list also includes his former presidential campaign chair, Paul Manafort, and Manafort's colleague, Rick Gates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

He went on to work for Ronald Reagan's successful presidential campaigns in 1980 and 1984, and advised George HW Bush in his bid for the White House in 1988.

Stone's attorney, Grant Smith, told CNN in a statement that Stone's misstatements were due to forgetfulness and were "immaterial".

"The President did nothing wrong". It says Stone told campaign officials he had information indicating WikiLeaks had obtained documents damaging to Hillary Clinton's campaign. When Trump ultimately threw his hat in the race in the 2016 election cycle, Stone was by his side as a campaign adviser.

Stone responded that "Organisation 1" would release "a load every week going forward". The investigation has laid bare multiple contacts between Trump associates and Russian Federation during the campaign and transition period and efforts by several to hide those communications. An associate of that official texted Stone after the release to say, "Well done".

"In Mueller's mind this is a campaign cavorting with the enemy", Zeldin said. "I will defeat them in court". Though he was quickly ousted from the campaign, he has remained an ardent defender of the president and a coloruful critic of the Mueller probe. However, it was his time inside the Trump campaign that Mueller and congressional investigators have focused on. "This is someone who had been very active in Republican Party politics for a long time", Democratic US Senator Chris Coons told MSNBC.

Instead it mirrors other Mueller cases in alleging cover-ups and deception, accusing Mr Stone of lying to lawmakers about WikiLeaks, tampering with witnesses and obstructing a congressional probe into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian Federation to tip the election.
