German court says nein to Qualcomm's 'groundless' patent suit against Apple

German court says nein to Qualcomm's 'groundless' patent suit against Apple

According to Cnet, Williams said Apple wanted to split the modem orders between Qualcomm and Intel, just like it did with the iPhone X and iPhone 8 releases.

After Qualcomm has recently been able to ban the sale of various iPhone models in court in various countries (including countries like Germany), Qualcomm now appears to be attacking apple in yet a another way. Apple's complaints have leaned more on Qualcomm's unfair and illegal business practices while Qualcomm has sued Apple for patent infringement.

Qualcomm's executive vice president and general counsel, Don Rosenberg, told Reuters that Qualcomm disagreed with the Mannheim's court decision and will "continue to enforce its rights against Apple worldwide".

Apple COO Jeff Williams testified in court that his company has been unable to persuade Qualcomm to work with it after Apple filed lawsuits protesting Qualcomm's licensing practices.

Qualcomm, on the other hand, was unsurprisingly not chuffed about the decision.

iPhone X - until the last model, which is the Qualcomm chip. The company hasn't said which of the two companies would make the cut and how the orders would be split between the chosen manufacturer and the existing supplier Intel. Blevins besides this also shared that Apple is considering making Intel the sole supplier of modems for the Apple Watch. Because that means, for example, that if Apple spend per device $ 60 more for a stainless steel or aluminum housing, so that 3 dollars for Qualcomm would be due, even if the chip group have nothing to do with it. Qualcomm has already said it will appeal the decision, as the pair trade blows in various courts throughout across the world.

In July 2018, Apple terminated its exclusive partnership with Qualcomm to have the chip-maker supply modems for its iPhones. When Mollenkopf refused to play ball, Williams had to contact Intel which "had to scramble" to meet Apple's supply needs. So whereas Qualcomm was demanding a $7.50 royalty payment for each iPhone sold, Apple believed the royalty payment should be more in the range of $1.50.

There are other troubling things written into Qualcomm contracts too: that anyone signing an agreement with it automatically has to license their intellectual property back to Qualcomm - something Apple baulked at.
