China ready to punish tech giants who recognise Taiwan

"The biggest concern is that ... they are getting to a point where the PLA leadership may actually tell Xi Jinping that they are confident in their capabilities", the official said, referring to China's president.

The DIA report referenced a Chinese white paper from 2015, titled "China Military Strategy" (pdf), where the Chinese regime explained that while world war is unlikely, it intends to prepare for the possibility of local war.

China has spent increasingly more money each year for more than a decade - including some $200 billion in 2018 - to modernize its weaponry and professionalize its People's Liberation Army, which has roughly 2 million troops, Defense Intelligence Agency officials determined in the report, "China Military Power".

The report detailed China's immediate intentions to modernize to the level of other leading militaries, including the US military, for the objective of invading Taiwan.

In a meeting with United States chief of naval operations Admiral John Richardson in Beijing on Tuesday, China's chief of staff Li Zuocheng issued a warning against foreign forces coming to Taiwan's help.

"If anyone wants to separate Taiwan from China, the Chinese military will safeguard the national unity at all costs so as to protect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity", Gen. Li Zuocheng, the PLA's chief of the Joint Staff Department, told Richardson during a meeting in Beijing, according to the newspaper.

"Beijing's longstanding interest to eventually compel Taiwan's reunification with the mainland and deter any attempt by Taiwan to declare independence has served as the primary driver for China's military modernization", DIA Director Robert Ashley wrote.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Mnuchin has raised "the idea of lifting some or all tariffs" in a series of meetings as senior administration officials chart a course towards a crucial March 1 deadline in the ongoing trade spat between the United States and China.

Washington has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help it defend itself and is the island's main source of arms.

Beijing believes Taiwan should be part of a unified China.

The report concludes: "China's leaders hope that possessing these military capabilities will deter pro-independence moves by Taiwan or, should deterrence fail, will permit a range of tailored military options against Taiwan and potential third-party military intervention".

The reclaimed territory in the South China Sea by China is equipped with harbours and berthing areas that are capable of accommodating large naval ships, increasing the PLAN's ability to exercise control of critical SLOCs, it said.

Over the last few years China has made a series of ambitious military reforms and acquired new technology as it aims to improve its ability to fight regional conflicts over places like Taiwan, according to a new report from the US Defense Intelligence Agency.

USA defense officials have become particularly alarmed about China's advances in super-fast "hypersonic" technology, which could allow it to field missiles that are far harder to detect.

China is "on the verge of fielding some of the most modern weapon systems in the world".

"In some areas, it already leads the world", the Pentagon report adds, according to Agence France-Presse.
