Brexit Bedlam: Parliament Sinks PM May’s EU Divorce Deal by 230 Votes

In the wake of the vote, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told the House of Commons that Mrs May's "catastrophic" defeat represented an "absolutely decisive" verdict on her Brexit negotiations and said he has tabled a vote of confidence.

Before the vote, Sky News analysis suggested she would fall far short, with 224 having been expected to turn against her deal.

It required a leap of faith to place trust in a prime minister who, the Commons wisely decided, deserved very little.

In Britain's deepest political crisis for at least half a century, May and European Union leaders swapped assurances on the withdrawal deal on Monday, but there was little sign of a change of heart among rebel lawmakers.

If it loses the vote, the government has hinted it might simply reintroduce slightly tweaked versions of the same deal until parliament accepts it. She has also spoken to Germany's Angela Merkel twice in recent weeks.

A vote of "no confidence" is a mechanism that can be used by MPs to announce that they have lost faith in the Government and demand a new Prime Minister.

If a government can not be formed in that time frame, then parliament is dissolved and an early general election will be triggered.

Jeremy Corbyn has tabled a motion of no confidence in the Government in an attempt to force a general election. That would need to be passed by vote.

Speaking in the House of Commons, she said that a no-deal Brexit would "strengthen the hand" of those who wanted a "border poll" in Northern Ireland. However, there are no restrictions on how soon another confidence vote can be called, so Labour could put forward another no confidence motion at any point.

"We want to leave with a deal and we want to work with others who share that".

"Whilst some may wish to use this defeat to boost their political ambitions, we will give the government the space to set out a plan to secure a better deal".

Despite making a strong plea to MPs to support her Brexit deal, few people across the political divide expect May to win enough support when more than 640 Westminster MPs vote on Tuesday evening.

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said the deal's rejection increased the "risk of a disorderly withdrawal of the UK".

May also held a meeting in the House of Commons with her own Conservative MPs, urging them to support her deal.

Mark Duffy/CPTheresa May speaks in the House of Commons in London after losing a vote on her Brexit plan on January 15, 2019.

Their European Union Withdrawal Number 2 Bill would give the Government three weeks to seek a compromise that can get through the Commons and allow the United Kingdom to leave the EU on March 29 as planned.

The route to a second referendum on Brexit - or a People's Vote - is unclear.

However, they insisted that "we are not in a position to agree to anything that changes or is inconsistent with the Withdrawal Agreement".

- The Prime Minister faced calls from a predecessor, Sir John Major, to revoke Article 50 to halt Brexit - as he warned it would be "morally reprehensible" to crash out without a deal.

"Either way, we will have to negotiate a transition period with them because the British can not afford to no longer have planes taking off or landing at home, and their supermarkets, as much as 70 percent, is supplied with (products) from continental Europe", Macron added.

Some Conservatives expect her to seek further talks with European Union leaders on changes before bringing a tweaked version of the bill back to Parliament, even though European Union leaders insist the agreement can not be renegotiated.
