Phil Masinga was a rare breed, says Jordaan

South African legend Phil Masinga has passed away from "a cancer related disease", the nation's football association has announced.

Phil was first admitted to Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp in December, as reported by The Citizen.

Masinga made his global debut for South Africa in 1992 in the country's first match after readmission to worldwide football post-apartheid.

It sparked joyous scenes in South Africa, a country still basking in the afterglow of the fall of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela as president three years earlier.

"A loyal servant of the game, on and off the field of play", he added in a twit.

South Africa has lost another giant.

Cape Town - The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the death of Bafana Bafana legend Phil "Chippa" Masinga on Sunday.

Masinga died on Sunday after a short illness.

Jordaan said that goal against Republic of Congo was "still the most celebrated goal in the country".

Masinga played for Leeds between 1994 and 1996 making 31 appearances and scoring five goals.

Reportedly, Radebe was only part of the deal to keep Masinga, viewed as the more valuable asset, happy in a foreign land.

The South African global striker spent two years at Leeds United in England.

Radebe went on to captain Leeds and become one of the club's all-time greats, but only arrived at Elland Road to make Masinga's move to West Yorkshire easier.

Soccer Laduma sends their deepest condolences to family and friends of the late Masinga.

Masinga spent two seasons in England before moving to Swiss Club Saint Gallen.
